Why Your DTF Print Isn’t Sticking | And How to Fix It | Drop Of Colour

There is nothing more frustrating than pressing a DTF transfer, lifting the heat press and discovering that the design has not stuck properly.

The edges may lift, parts of the design may stay on the film, or the entire print may peel away from the garment.

The good news is that the problem is usually easy to identify.

When a DTF print does not stick, the cause is normally related to one of the following:

  • Incorrect temperature

  • Not enough pressure

  • Incorrect pressing time

  • Moisture in the garment

  • Peeling the film incorrectly

  • Uneven pressure

  • Incorrectly cured adhesive powder

Whether you are pressing your own transfers or using professional DTF printing services in Cape Town, Johannesburg or anywhere else in South Africa, the following checks will help you achieve a strong and durable finish.

1. Check Your Heat Press Settings

The three most important parts of pressing a DTF transfer are:

Heat, pressure and time.

All three need to work together. Even when two settings are correct, one incorrect setting can cause the transfer to fail.

Your temperature may be too low

DTF adhesive powder needs enough heat to melt and bond with the fibres of the garment.

Most DTF transfers are pressed somewhere between 150°C and 165°C, but the exact temperature depends on the film, powder, ink and garment being used.

Always follow the pressing instructions supplied with your DTF transfers.

If the temperature is too low, the adhesive may soften without fully bonding to the fabric. The design may look fine at first but begin lifting during peeling or washing.

Your heat press may not be reaching the displayed temperature

Just because the heat press display says 160°C does not necessarily mean that the entire platen is reaching 160°C.

Older heat presses and cheaper units may develop cold spots or inaccurate temperature readings.

One section of the transfer may stick properly while another section remains loose.

You may not be using enough pressure

Pressure is one of the most common reasons why DTF prints do not stick.

When the adhesive melts, it needs to be pushed into the fibres of the garment. If the pressure is too light, the print may only sit on top of the fabric.

Use medium-to-firm pressure unless your transfer supplier gives different instructions.

On a manual heat press, you should normally feel firm resistance when closing the press. It should not close too easily, but you also should not need to force it to the point where the machine may be damaged.

Your pressing time may be too short

The adhesive needs enough time under heat and pressure to create a complete bond.

Many DTF transfers are pressed for approximately 10 to 15 seconds, although this varies depending on the transfer and garment.

Opening the press too early can leave the adhesive only partially activated.

Use an infrared thermometer or heat-testing strips to check the actual temperature across your heat press platen.

Test the centre and all four corners. This can help you identify cold spots that may be causing inconsistent results.

2. Always Pre-Press the Garment

Fabric naturally absorbs moisture from the air, especially cotton garments.

When a damp garment is placed under a hot heat press, the moisture turns into steam. That steam can push against the adhesive and prevent the transfer from bonding correctly.

This may cause:

  • Small bubbles

  • Pitting in the print

  • Lifting edges

  • Patchy adhesion

  • Complete transfer failure

How to fix it

Pre-press the garment for approximately 3 to 5 seconds before positioning the DTF transfer.

Pre-pressing helps to:

  • Remove moisture

  • Flatten wrinkles

  • Warm the fabric

  • Create a smooth pressing surface

  • Improve adhesion

Do not skip this step, especially during humid weather or when garments have been stored in a cold or damp area.

3. Make Sure You Are Peeling the Film Correctly

DTF films are normally supplied as either:

  • Hot peel

  • Warm peel

  • Cold peel

These films must be peeled differently.

Cold-peel film

Cold-peel film must be allowed to cool before removing the carrier.

If you peel it while the transfer is still hot, the adhesive may still be soft. Parts of the design may remain on the film or pull away from the garment.

Allow the garment to cool properly before peeling.

Hot-peel film

Hot-peel film is designed to be removed shortly after the heat press opens.

Waiting too long may cause the release layer to grip the design again, making the film difficult to remove.

Warm-peel film

Warm-peel film normally needs a few seconds to settle before peeling. It should not be removed immediately, but it also should not be allowed to cool completely.

Always confirm which type of film you received.

When peeling, keep the film low and pull it smoothly across the garment. Do not pull it straight upward, as this places unnecessary strain on the transfer.

4. Watch Out for Seams, Collars, Zippers and Buttons

A heat press needs to make flat and even contact with the entire design.

If your print is positioned close to a collar, thick seam, zipper, pocket or button, the raised section may prevent the platen from applying pressure to the rest of the transfer.

The heat may still reach the design, but the adhesive will not be pushed properly into the fabric.

This often causes one side or one section of the design to lift.

How to fix it

Use a heat-resistant pressing pillow, foam pad or smaller pressing pad underneath the print area.

The raised seams can sink into the pad while the design remains elevated. This allows the heat press to apply even pressure across the entire transfer.

For small chest prints, sleeves, pockets and difficult areas, a smaller pressing pad can make a major difference.

5. Check the Condition of the DTF Transfer

Sometimes the problem is not the heat press or the garment. The transfer itself may not have been cured correctly.

DTF adhesive powder needs to be melted evenly during production.

Under-cured adhesive

If the adhesive has not been heated for long enough, it may remain powdery, wet or uneven.

An under-cured transfer may:

  • Stick in some areas but not others

  • Feel soft or sticky

  • Have visible loose powder

  • Peel away easily after pressing

Over-cured adhesive

Too much heat can also damage the adhesive.

An over-cured transfer may become brittle and lose some of its ability to bond with the garment.

Incorrect storage

DTF adhesive powder is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the air.

Transfers and powder stored in humid conditions may develop:

  • Clumping

  • Uneven adhesive coverage

  • Moisture contamination

  • Poor adhesion

Completed transfers should also be stored flat in a dry environment and protected from heat, dust and direct sunlight.

A properly cured DTF transfer should have a smooth, even adhesive layer with a slightly textured appearance.

There should not be large powder clumps, bare areas or wet patches.

6. Do Not Skip the Second Press

After removing the carrier film, the transfer should normally be pressed again.

This is known as the second press, finishing press or post-press.

The first press transfers the design onto the garment. The second press helps to push the design further into the fabric and improves the final finish.

Skipping the second press may cause the design to:

  • Sit too high on the garment

  • Feel rough

  • Lift around the edges

  • Have reduced wash durability

How to do the second press

After peeling the carrier film:

  1. Cover the design with parchment paper, silicone paper or a suitable finishing sheet.

  2. Press the design again for approximately 5 to 10 seconds.

  3. Use the same temperature unless your transfer supplier provides different instructions.

The finishing sheet you use can also affect the final appearance.

Parchment or silicone paper normally creates a more natural or matte finish, while some finishing sheets may create a smoother or slightly glossier surface.

7. Make Sure the Garment Is Suitable for Heat Pressing

Most DTF transfers can be applied to cotton, polyester and blended garments, but not every material behaves in the same way.

Certain waterproof, coated or highly textured fabrics may resist the adhesive.

Heat-sensitive polyester may also require lower temperatures to avoid scorching, colour migration or press marks.

Before completing a large order, always test one garment first.

A small test can save you from damaging an entire batch of clothing.
