How to Prepare Your Artwork for DTF Printing | Drop Of Colour
The Complete Guide
Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is a massive game-changer for custom apparel. It gives you vibrant colors, incredible durability, and the freedom to print on almost any fabric — from cotton and polyester to leather.
But here is the golden rule of DTF: Your print is only as good as your artwork. Because DTF printers lay down a solid white under-base behind every single pixel of color, any tiny flaw, stray background pixel, or low-resolution fuzziness in your digital file will show up on your final garment.
To help you get crisp, retail-ready results every time, here is our complete guide on how to prepare your artwork for Drop of Colour!
1. Get Your File Basics Right
Before you even start designing, make sure your digital canvas is optimized for commercial garment printing:
- File Formats: We accept both vector and high-resolution raster files. Our preferred formats include PNG, SVG, PDF, PSD (Photoshop), AI (Illustrator), and CDR (CorelDRAW).
- Resolution is King: Set your canvas to at least 300 DPI (dots per inch). Lower resolutions (like 72 DPI web images) will look pixelated, blurry, and cheap when scaled up to fit a t-shirt.
- Color Profile (CMYK): Always design or save your artwork in CMYK color mode. Digital screens use RGB, but printers use physical inks. If you submit RGB files, our system will automatically convert them to CMYK, which can slightly shift bright neon colors to flatter, darker tones.
2. Ditch the Background (Transparent Is Key)
Unless you want a solid white or colored square around your design, your background must be 100% transparent.
Using a transparent PNG allows your design to blend seamlessly onto any garment color without ugly, hard-edged boxes around your logo.
3. Avoid Glows, Shadows, and Low Opacity
Because of the way DTF printing works, a solid white adhesive ink layer is printed behind your entire design to make the colors pop on dark fabrics. Because of this white underbase, avoid using:
- Glow effects or drop shadows (they will print with a solid, harsh white backing instead of fading out gracefully).
- Semi-transparent/faded pixels.
- Gradients that fade to 0% opacity.
For the best results, stick to bold, solid elements with clean, sharp edges.
4. Size Accurately & Do NOT Mirror
- Print-Ready Sizing: Always send your artwork at the exact dimensions you want it printed. If you upload a file that is 5cm wide, it will print at 5cm wide.
- No Mirroring Needed: Our professional RIP printing software handles the mirroring step automatically. Please do not flip or mirror your artwork before sending it to us!
- Keep a Safe Zone: Keep all critical text and design details slightly away from the absolute edges of your printable space to avoid any cut-offs during the transfer cutting process.
How to Package Your Designs: The Step-by-Step Checklist
When you are ready to export and submit your artwork to us, follow this checklist to ensure a flawless print:
1.Check Transparency:Step 1.
Turn off any background layers in Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva. Verify that you see the checkered “transparent” background grid behind your design.
2.Verify Sizing and DPI:Step 2.
Go to your image settings and ensure your canvas is set to 300 DPI or higher, and set the physical width and height to your exact target print size.
3.Convert Color Profile:Step 3.
Set your document color mode to CMYK. Adjust any colors that look dull after the conversion to get them as close to your desired output as possible.
4.Save or Export:Step 4.
Save your file as a transparent PNG, SVG, or high-res PDF. If your file size is larger than 10MB, you can easily send it to us via WeTransfer at orders@dropofcolour.co.za.
